This could be a lengthy post, so grab a cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, whatever you wish and get comfy. Lol. I don't really even know where to start this, but basically I want to be totally upfront and honest with my readers and keep you in the loop...
When I first started this blog, it was simply a way to keep a record of how much I was saving and basically show my friends and family what I was doing. From there I got questions and started answering them and I decided to turn it into a way to show others (my friends and family) how to do what I was doing and save their families some money. From there I really started getting into it. I started blogging daily and broadening the types of deals I passed on.
In the last couple of months it has really grown! I revamped my blog, which I'm still changing almost daily. I started getting a lot of new readers and even started a Facebook fan page. I also became an affiliate with a few companies in order to start generating a little bit of income to sponsor some more giveaways. Basically I get a little kick back for referring people to places like Coupons.com, Amazon, and other offers like the ones found HERE. I wasn't doing it to get rich or anything...I mean, I get like $.03 every time someone prints a coupon. Lol. I was mostly just wanted to be able to sponsor some great giveaways in the future and was just kind of going with the flow of everything.
Well, then the blog kind of started to take off. I became "bloggy" friends with other coupon blog owners and have done some guest posting on other sites, which increased my number of readers. I started getting comments and emails from people living all over, like Colorado, Oregon, Washington, California, Florida, Alabama, you name it! It really is SOOOO cool to be reaching so many and helping so many! I just truly do enjoy it a lot and love being able to have an impact on people and save them money. It's a most wonderful feeling! And it's exciting! There's just so much to love about it!
However, it DOES take up a lot of my time. I probably spend about three complete hours (spread throughout the day) on an average day finding deals, sharing deals, posting deals, answering emails, responding to comments, updating my Facebook pages, etc. (I don't know how all of those other blogs do it! No wonder a lot of them have more than one author! Lol) I recently started branching out my affiliations with companies (like the ones you see advertised in my sidebars) and my revenue started increasing. That was exciting too! I can get PAID to do something I truly love and also get to benefit so many others? The concept is still fascinating to me!
So, when I was contacted this morning by a Boise business owner asking about an affiliation opportunity where I could advertise awesome discounts for local businesses and get some type of referral kick back, I was totally excited! Opportunities were arising and I am slowly getting Ali's Coupon Adventures out there! It just means a lot to know that my little ol' blog has really become something more.
However, upon talking to my husband about this opportunity this morning, he said some things that really made me stop in my tracks and got me thinking and re-evaluating things. First of all, I didn't start this blog to make money in any way. He wondered if maybe I was getting away from my roots and core beliefs. I countered with the fact that things have just evolved naturally and that any money I am making has been up to this point solely for putting right back into my site (such as sponsoring giveaways) and that even non-profit companies have to fund themselves. I spend a lot of time blogging and sharing things with my readers. I am not planning on making a living out of it, but it's nice to get a little in return for all of my efforts! Plus, I have to admit that it would feel good to be able to contribute to my family's income.
He said he understood, but, again, questioned whether I was getting away from what truly mattered...helping others as a sort of "charity" if you will or service to be offered to others and more importantly, being a stay-at-home mommy of our three children and spending quality time with them. At that I have to admit that blogging takes away some precious time I have with my children, however, I again had a counter to that, thinking that I am not only doing something that I've grown to love, helping others, and now making a LITTLE income for my family, but I still get to STAY AT HOME with my kids! It seemed like a win-win. I feel like I've done a pretty good job at balancing my blog and family. On the weekends you generally see little, if any, posting done because my husband travels during the week and is only home on weekends most times, so that's our main time to spend together as a family and that's where my focus is. During the week I try to get the majority of my blogging for the day done in the mornings while the kids are eating breakfast and starting their day, then again during my toddler's nap times. Then throughout the day I will do quick posts here and there for time-sensitive deals or things I'm really excited about. At night, after the kids are all in bed, I will spend about a half hour or so catching up on things.
The more I have been thinking about it, though, I am forced to step back and ask the question...where is this going? Do I want to scale back and make this blog more of a hobby like it used to be? Simply sharing my experiences and helping to teach others how to use this system to save their families money? Or do I want to continue devoting so much time to it and continue to make something out of it. Again, I REALLY do love doing it. I want to be able to continue, but feel like I am at a crossroads. I'm not sure which way to go. I mean...how long can I keep this up? How long before I feel like I missed out on so many important moments with my children because I was busy at the computer...?
Where am I even going with all of this and WHY on earth am I telling you this?? Well, I mostly just needed to vent. I also want to disclose everything and be honest with everyone. I am not here to make money. I pass on deals that I think are beneficial or worth your time and effort. If they happen to generate a small amount of income for me, great. That's an added bonus. Icing on the cake. But do I continue to grow myself and my site or do I scale back and focus on other, more important things? How do I find a good balance? Maybe it comes down to simply creating a schedule for myself, much like I would have if I had a "real" job. Lol. Say, I spend one hour in the morning, one at night. Period. That way I am not taking time away from my kids during the day. I don't know how well I would stick to it, though...I'm not good at that sort of thing. :) Do I perhaps limit myself to a certain number of posts per day? Or maybe give myself a day off during the week? I just don't know...
Alright, I guess I'll wrap things up for now. Just know that things may change a little. I just have to decide what's best for me and my family. My husband, I know, will support me in whatever I decide to do, now it's just a matter of actually deciding! Thanks for taking the time to read this super long post and let me share my thoughts...continue on with your Friday and have a super weekend!

*Back to Basics--Internet Printables*
Just wanted to revisit an old post for any new readers--
Newspapers are a great source for coupons, but definitely not the only one! There are tons of coupons to be found online, called "printables" or "IP's." One of the main resources for online coupons is coupons.com (which you can access all coupons easily through the coupons.com bar on my sidebar). The first time you go to print coupons from coupons.com (and some other sites that have their own coupon printing program) you will have to install a small coupon printing software program on your computer (which coupons.com will give you the instructions to do so) in order to print. It does this so that it can limit the number of coupons printed to two per computer. They limit this so that people cannot just go print off a gazillion of a certain coupon. There are some coupons that you can only print once and occasionally even ones you can print more than twice. If you have access to multiple computers, then you can get even more great coupons.
Your initial thought is probably "that's sure a lot of paper and ink to print coupons...so am I really saving money?" Well, if you use up all of your color ink and good paper to do it, then it might not be worth it. The very first thing you should do is change your printer defaults when you're getting ready to print coupons. Set it to the lowest quality setting (by going to your "control panel" and going into your printer settings) and change it to black & white. Stores will still accept the coupons if they're black & white. No need to waste color ink on them! You can also switch to your lower quality print settings, so instead of printing with the "best photo" setting, change it to "text" or "draft" or whatever your low setting is. (Don't forget to change your settings back if you need to print something else!) Also, I bought some of the cheapest printer paper I could find ($.01 at Staples) and use it strictly for printing coupons. I save the thicker, more expensive stuff, for other things. So by doing those three things, you are cutting WAY back on what it will cost to print your coupons.
Also, you don't have to print EVERY coupon that you come across! You'll start to notice that a lot of the coupons you can find online are the same ones that are in your Sunday papers. As long as you're getting your multiple Sunday papers, you don't really need to print off those same printables, unless you want to get even more of a particular item. There are exceptions, though, as sometimes you can find internet printable coupons for a much higher value than the ones in the paper.
Another thing, when I first started this system, I made the huge mistake of going to coupons.com and printing off every single one of the coupons I thought I would use. Well, needless to say I didn't use but maybe half of them, as they expired before I had a chance. I have noticed that when I print coupons off coupons.com, they usually expire 1 month from the date you print them (though this is not always the case...unfortunately you can't tell until you print them, as it does not give an exp. date on the website). So, unless they are a high-value coupon or one you would be sad to miss if it disappeared, don't print them until you actually need them. Otherwise, they will wind up expiring before that item ever goes on sale. And a lot of the coupons come back every month. There are times, however, that you will see an internet printable coupon that appears the same as the one you got in the paper, but check the coupon value because sometimes, even though you get a $.50/2 coupon in the paper, you will find a $1/1 coupon online for the same item!
At the beginning of every month the coupons reset on coupons.com and you are able to print some of the same coupons again, as well as new coupons that have been posted. Throughout the month various new coupons will be released as well. There is one thing to mention here...some of the printable coupons have a limited quantity of how many can be printed. So, many of them are gone within the first few days to a week because the allotted number of coupons (say 10,000) has been reached and the coupon is pulled from the web. I would suggest that you plan on getting on the site the first week of the month and print off any of the higher value coupons that you want before they reach their limit and are gone. As you get more familiar with the site and with couponing, you will start to learn which coupons come back every month, which ones are always in the newspaper any way (so you don't need to print them) and which ones get snagged quickly and that you need to print as soon as possible. I am still learning these things....
There are also other places to snag online coupons, such as SmartSource, Redplum, or through MoneySavingMom.com. Also, usually, even if you find the same coupon on each site...you can print it twice from EACH link! So that can be pretty helpful sometimes if you need more of a particular coupon, but don't have access to another computer. Target also offers printable coupons from their website. These are actually Target store coupons, though, and can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for the same item! Go HERE to see the available Target coupons.
In addition to those sites, there are other places to snag great coupons. There are tons of coupons to be found at company websites. Sometimes you have to sign up with the website to get the coupons or freebies, so I suggest creating a 2nd email account, such as a gmail, yahoo, or hotmail account, that you use strictly for signing up for coupons, freebies, or online offers. Go HERE to learn more about signing up for online offers. After you create your coupon email account, take full advantage of signing up for free offers and coupons! They're EVERYwhere! I have already received great coupons and tons of free samples in the mail by signing up for stuff. The "brick" coupons you usually find through websites and blogs can be printed twice also by selecting "print," then after it's done printing, click your browser's back button (sometimes you have to click it three times if you're using internet explorer). It will automatically print again. Some "brick" coupons only allow you to print once.
Troubleshooting:
I do not know a whole lot in the way of troubleshooting your printing problems, but here are just a couple of the main things I can think of that you should know...
*If you select print and you simply get a "Please wait..." or it just sits on a blank page and nothing happens, that is probably because the page was intended for a different internet browser than you are using. So, if you happen to be using Firefox when this happens, try opening up the link in Internet Explorer and see if that fixes the problem and vice versa.
*Make sure you are hooked up to a printer BEFORE clicking "print coupon" because they will automatically start printing. Though, even if you aren't hooked up, they should go sit and wait in your printer tray until you do make the connection, but better safe than sorry!
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I'll do my best to answer!

Keep an eye out!
Don't forget to keep an eye out for these when shopping at Albertsons...
They are little surveys that print out at the bottom of your receipt sometimes. If you complete them you will be given a validation code and you can redeem the receipt for $2 off a future visit! A lot of times the checker will point it out to you if you get one, but sometimes they don't notice, so just be sure to keep an eye out and don't throw them away on accident! You have 7 days to phone in for the survey or you lose it!

Otherwise, these are totally awesome and I've used them many times! It's like buying $25 for only $3! You just print them up right after purchase and take them with you so there's no waiting for a coupon in the mail!
You can also use these printable coupons to go grab a bite:
:ORANGE JULIUS: Buy One Get One FREE Premium or Light fruit smoothie . Exp. 2/25
:SOUPER SALAD: $5.99 Lunch or Dinner buffet, good for up to 4 people. Exp. 3/3. Only for Souper Fresh Club (SFC) members, but you can sign up HERE for free.
:QUIZNOS: FREE sub when you purchase a sub and a regular fountain drink and $1 off any choice 2 combo. Exp. 2/21. (Thanks Hip2Save)
If you know of a coupon or deal that I missed, feel free to add it in the comments section!
Thanks Mommy Saves Big for a lot of these!

Get coupons for Disney movies when you upgrade from DVD to Bluray!
I just found out about something new and awesome! My family had received the movie G-Force for Christmas and I had forgotten to enter the Disney Movie Rewards code until my son reminded me last night. So, I went to enter them in a little bit ago and when I took out the sheet inside the movie with the code on it, I found another little piece of paper. Turns out that you can go to DisneyUpgradeToBlu.com and for select movies that you have on DVD, you can get a coupon for $8 off of the same movie on bluray!
All you do is select which movies you wish to upgrade and then print the form (see how I've selected "add coupon" under Cars). You will submit the form, along with proof tabs from the dvds and send them in. Then, you'll receive a coupon via email for $8 off that same movie on bluray! I just think that is totally cool! Wish I'd have known this sooner, as there's a couple of movies on there that I already upgrade to bluray previously and WITHOUT coupons! :( Oh well. Any way, here are just a few of the 56 different movies you can get "upgrade" coupons for:
Don't forget to check out Disney Movie Rewards where, as a member, you will receive a FREE Bluray for your birthday!

Are you pregnant or do you have children?
"From baby names to birthing questions to advice about naptime, BabyCenter is here to support you on your journey to parenthood. Sign up for our free email newsletter (it's customized to your due date) so you can track your baby's development week by week and get insight from experts about important parenting issues. You'll also receive valuable coupons, sale notices, and free offers from BabyCenter and our partners. Click Here."
If you are pregnant or have young children, you MUST sign up at BabyCenter. I stumbled upon this website when I was pregnant with my oldest (now 7) and still use it to this day, three kids later! It is absolutely GREAT for when you are pregnant, as it lets you really know what's going on inside your womb and your baby's development. The weekly newsletters are a must, as they let you in on every detail of your baby's development. I just absolutely loved feeling so connected to my little bundle inside. The site also provides countless resources for expectant parents, including forums, polls, help with baby names, news, blogs, photos, videos, etc.
It's also great for parents with small children, though! I still use it for all of my kids. I love getting monthly updates on my children's development! Even my husband loves getting this newsletter! It really helps you feel educated about your children and what they're going through at each particular stage of development.
If you haven't already, then I REALLY recommend that you sign up for this, because it really is SUCH A GREAT RESOURCE!

I'm back!
Wow, I had such an AMAZING time in Vegas this weekend with my hubby. It was an experience I'll NEVER forget. The highlight was going to see the Beatles' "LOVE" Cirque du Soleil show! It was so incredible I can't possibly put it into words.
Any way, the vacation is over and I'm back to the real world. :) (I missed my kids like CRAZY!) I definitely have a TON to catch up on today! I am going to get hard at work and try to catch up...stay tuned!

Headed to Las Vegas!
Woohoo! I'm headed to Las Vegas for a weekend getaway with the hubby to celebrate my birthday, Valentine's Day, and our anniversary (that we never celebrated back in January). I leave today around 3:00 and won't be back until Sunday evening, so, needless to say, you won't be seeing me over the weekend! I will be enjoying some much-needed time away from all of the hustle and bustle of motherhood. :) I do have to say that this will be the first time being away for more than a few hours from my little girl who is now 10 mos old. Would you want to leave these precious faces...?
Lord knows I love them, but every mommy needs a break once in a while! :) Maybe I'll come back with enough to pay for all three of their college educations! Haha. Any way, everyone have a wonderful weekend and I'll be back on Monday ready to share some deals! Oh, and stay tuned for another giveaway next week!
